Remaking Kim's image: octogenarian dictator jettisons some flagrant fabrications
Article Abstract:
North Korean dictator Kim Il Sung has written two new volumes of memoirs that partly correct some of the falsehoods once told about his life. Kim, who was born in 1912 and who has been the glorified object of a personality cult since taking control of North Korea in 1945, tells the story of his life to his 21st year in two volumes entitled 'With the Century.' Although Kim acknowledges some facts that he previously concealed, such as working for the Chinese Communists and Soviets early in his career, he also creates new distortions such as describing North Korea as an egalitarian society.

The new Moses
Article Abstract:
Actions taken by N Korean leader Kim Jong Il signal ambition and shrewd planning rather than the imminent demise of the country. By declaring a lack of arable land he has avoided responsibility for a food crisis, qualified for intl aid, and freed hard currency for non-food uses. By getting the needed rice from S Korea he satisfied US and Japanese demands. He hopes to establish tighter state control over agriculture and the economy, and arrange an influx of technology to build an economic powerhouse.

Shutting out the world
Article Abstract:
North Korea's refusal to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency may be its way of dealing with the internal power struggle going on in the country. The transfer of leadership from Pres Kim II Sung to his son Kim Jong II could spell some major problems because the latter lacks popular support. Ostracization from the international community may force the country to unite and support its government and this could be the key to North Korea's internal crisis.
