Article Abstract:
Indonesian president, B.J. Habibie, has strong ties in Germany because he has a villa in Hamburg and lived in Germany for 19 years before going back to Indonesia in 1974. Habibie has often visited Germany on political or diplomatic business and is well known. Chancellor Helmut Kohl offered his backing when he was elected and German officials openly support him. Much of the German investment in Indonesia is as a result of Habibie's reputation and Habibie is likely to expect Germany to help Indonesia overcome its economic problems.

Paradise for crooks: secretive islands provide a safe stop for laundered money
Article Abstract:
The South Pacific is becoming a haven for crooks and money launderers who are taking advantage of the islands' secretive banking regimes. The South Pacific islands cannot develop industry or agriculture and have to find other sources of income. Vanuatu is an established tax haven with almost 80 private banks, 2,000 trust companies and many insurance agents, accountants and solicitors, most of which are legitimate. However, Vanuatu is increasingly being used as a haven for dirty money.
