Huitong plan roils creditors
Article Abstract:
Economic planners in China are actively encouraging the use of debt-equity swaps to rescue financially-troubled state enterprises. These swaps, however, can be quite problematic for foreign investors as the case of the Huitong International Trust and Investment Corp shows. The Hainan Province-based company's restructuring proposals are considered by many investors to be quite unpalatable and highly unfair to creditors. At the heart of the complaints of creditors is the lack of financial information on the assets of state enterprises undergoing restructurings.

Computer manufacturers in China have discovered a new target market for their products, the masses. In reaching out to this sector, manufacturers such as China Great Wall Computer Co are marketing computers complete with modem, monitor and CD-ROM at only $600 but without the other amenities such as software, free service and add-ons. The low-priced computers seem to be the perfect solution for Chinese families since they cut about $200 off the regular price of a typical brand-name computer.
