Hyundai plans U.K. wafer plant
Article Abstract:
The Hyundai Group, which is the world's second biggest producer of memory chips, plans to invest in a wafer fabrication factory in Scotland by late 1998 despite the current glut in chips and the subsequent drastic drop in prices. The new plant will make dynamic random access memory chips, which are the most popular chips among personal computer manufacturers. The investment is intended as a long-run effort to catch up with the Samsung Group, which is the world's top producer.

U.S., Taiwan reach accord
Article Abstract:
The US and Taiwan have agreed in principle to sign a broad investment pact which allows the entry of US firms into Taiwan's services market in return for US support of Taiwan's entry into the US-Japan Semiconductor Association and the Global Government Forum. Taiwan would still like the US to help it enter the World Trade Organization, a move that is being blocked by China whose membership in the WTO is still unsecured.
