HOUSING CREDIT RATING SCHEME ON THE ANVIL
Article Abstract:
A rating instrument for housing is being drafted under the aegis of the National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO), an agency of real estate developers, to safeguard the interests of the consumers. The draft committee consists of representatives from public and private financiers, Department of Consumer Affairs, the National Housing Bank and Housing and Urban Development Corporation. The committee is chaired by the Minister for Urban Affairs, Government of India, Mr Ram Jethmalani. The broad parameters of the instrument will be land titles, costing, nature of approvals from local authorities, period of completion, escrow accounting and property management. The instrument is expected to benefit both the genuine buyers and real estate developers.(ranga)

SOAP SECTOR MAY RETAIN LATHER DESPITE POOR SOPS
Article Abstract:
The excise duty on soaps(laundry and toilet) has been reduced from 18 percent to 16 percent but the industry feels that it is too less to have any significant impact. The industry says that it will pass on the benefit of the reduction to consumers. A five percent increase has been effected in Modvat and it now stands at 100 percent. (khr)
