IMPACT ON COMPUTING
Article Abstract:
Consumer electronics companies have smelt opportunity in the convergence of technologies and services. The penetration of the Internet in India is expected to soar when television can be used to surf the Net. With the low level of personal computer (PC) penetration in India, consumer electronics companies are confident of acquiring larger market shares with Web TV. Computer companies however claim to be one up in terms of technology. However, both Home PC and consumer electronics companies will compete for the same market. Already Shonk Technologies of Bangalore is ready to launch a set-top box at Rs10,000 to convert television into an Internet browser. The consumer will only need a telephone line and an Internet account. The set-top box eliminates the need for a PC and the knowledge of working on one. A Shonkh Web TV is also available, priced at Rs2 lakh. It has a high resolution screen and will also act as a telephone, an answering machine, a fax machine and allow video conferencing if the consumer has an ISDN connection. Not to be left behind Hewlett Packard (HP) has added the TV out feature connecting a TV and a PC, a multimedia keyboard with sound control and fast processors to its new PC. (uh)(psr)

AND NOW, TVs YOU CAN TALK TO
Article Abstract:
Innomedia Technologies of Bangalore has developed a technology, called Cable TV-based Home and Office Interactive Services (CHOIS), which converts the television set into an intelligent and interactive machine. Using CHOIS, TV viewers can talk to their cable operators and request for specific films, music or news from a vast repertoire. It is negotiating with cable operators and channels like STAR TV, Udaya TV and Doordarshan to include CHOIS on their platforms. Apart from the regular cable and satellite channels, CHOIS viewers get access to 27 other sub- channels covering films, music, arts, nature and education, among other topics. CHOIS also offers services like shopping, pay-per- view and video on request. It will enable viewers to make rail and bus bookings over television. While Innomedia Technologies has to set up the telecomputers at a cost of Rs20 crore with participation from government and private parties, a cable TV operator has to invest about Rs5 lakh for the CHOIS server and the end- user has to pay around Rs6,000 for the CHOIS pad. Innomedia Technologies manufactures the CHOIS server and the pad. The company has an equity base of Rs2 crore and employs 45 people. (tsm) (kvr)
