INDIA DRAGS EU TO WTO OVER BARRIERS ON BASMATI IMPORTS
Article Abstract:
India has taken the European Union (EU) to the World Trade Organisation for levying non-tariff barriers for basmati rice imports. It has called EU to discuss the issue and reduce the import duty on Indian basmati by Ecu250 per tonne. EU had introduced non tariff barriers through the Cumulative Recovery Scheme (CRS) in July 1997. Rice importers have to pay the full duty and claim refund after giving details of import price, certificate for quality of basmati rice imported and their wholesale prices. India is likely to win the case under the Headnote 7 of GATT. (rk)
