INVESTOR-FRIENDLY MEGA POWER POLICY ON ANVIL
Article Abstract:
The government of India has chalked out an investor friendly mega power policy. The policy will cover plants with a capacity of over 1000 mega watts (mw) which will be offering power to many states. The government proposes to offer a waiver of customs duty on imported equipment completely. It also proposes to provide a tax holiday of 10 years within the first 15 years of the project. It also plans to provide for securitisation of receivable by the Standing Independent Group. The government has identified 8500 mw plant capacity for the central power utilities and 7500 mw for the private sector. (ag)

DoT TO SPEND Rs90,000 Cr

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) plans to spend Rs90,000 crore during the Ninth Five Year Plan period (1997- 2002). It will add 20 million new telephones to the existing network. It has launched a website at New Delhi on March 14, 1999. DoT's telephone lines have increased to 21 million now from 83,800 in 1947. (rk)(m)
