The performance of Ashok Leyland Limited (ALL) is expected to improve in 1999 as it has received fresh orders from the armed forces and the government plans to place more orders for commercial vehicles. ALL manufactures commercial vehicles. It has increased production of vehicles by 20 percent in December 1998. It had earlier cut production due to losses and huge inventory. The number of working days per week has been increased from three days to five days. ALL has restructured its inventory management system. It has reduced stocks with dealers from 4,000 vehicles to 1,600. AT Kearney, management consultants are restructuring the supply chain management system of ALL. (rk)(vr)

PRIMA PLASTICS: GOING STRONG
Article Abstract:
Prima Plastics posted a 100 percent growth in net profit and 62 percent growth in sales in 1997-98. The company manufactures plastic moulded furniture. Fall in raw material prices has helped boost margins. The scrip which was traded at Rs7 has increased to Rs16-17. Its exports doubled to Rs28.88 million in 1997-98 (Rs14.6 million in 1996-97). It plans to expand its capacity at a cost of Rs150 million by setting up a new unit in Daman. The company's market capitalisation was estimated at Rs176 crore in 1997-98. (rk)
