IRIDIUM OFFERS AGGRESSIVE TARIFF PACKAGE
Article Abstract:
Iridium India Ltd (IIL), a satellite phone company, has chalked out a competitive tariff plan for its Indian subscribers. It plans to offer three tariff packages and two varieties of access services. The proposed package aims at attracting the clients of Inmarsat, IIL's only competitor. The tariff package depends on the cost of the handset. IIL plans to allow the subscribers to call any other Iridium number outside India free of cost for the first six months. Iridium LLC will bear the cost. IIL will be initially introducing the 8817 service in India. This service allows the use of the handset in India only. IIL will also be offering the 8816 services, which means that the handset can be used anywhere in the world. It will also be introducing dual mode handsets during February 1999. IIL plans to offer free service to the first 2,000 customers. (ag-psr)

LEVY ON BULK TEAS TO TAKE STEAM OFF INDUSTRY
Article Abstract:
The Union finance ministry has acceded to the demands of the packet tea companies and abolished the 8 percent excise duty on tea packets in unit containers between 101 gms and 20 kgs. But it has levied a specific duty of Rs2 per kg on bulk teas to realise additional revenues. The tea industry says that it stands to lose Rs170-180 crore due to the excise levy on bulk teas as it cannot be passed on to consumers. This new duty is likely to affect exports from plantations in south India which account for almost 40 percent of the country's tea exports. (khr)
