TURKEY: MORE AND MORE HYPERMARKETS

Hypermarkets are increasing their share of the retail market in Turkey with 100 hypermarkets operated in 1999 compared with only 36 units in 1996. This evolution is likely to continue in the next years. Continent, the French hypermarket chain (Promodes) has plans to build two new hypermarkets (Izmir and Istanbul). French chain Carrefour is likely to open six new hypermarkets before the end of the year 2000, and BGS, a subsidiary of Metro, will invest FFr 7bn over a five-year period to open hypermarkets in the Turkish cities of Adana, Konya, Istanbul, Eskisehir and Izmir.

SLOVENIA: BIG RETAIL CHAINS TAKE AN INTEREST

Slovenia attracts big retail chains. Two French companies are targeting this country: Leclerc, which plans to open a hypermarket with 8,500 square metres of sales space at Ljubljana in the year 2000, and Hyparlo which is especially targeting Slovenia. In the meantime, local retailers are consolidating. Mercator, the leader in Slovenia has already acquired three of its competitors - Klas, Goriska, and Loka. It now holds a 20% market share. Mercator expects to make a turnover of FFr 6.6bn in 1999.
