Corsican terrorists planted two different bombs against French targets, renewing concerns about the independence movement in Corsica. Former French Prime Minister Raymond Barre suggested granting Corsica independence, but that could hurt Corsica which receives large subsidies from France.

The latest strain in relations between the US and France results from a disagreement over agricultural subsidies in the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs. The US has always been suspicious of French motives, while France is often too vehement about its differences.
