In British bank fight, HBOS could launch own bid for Abbey
Article Abstract:
Britain's fourth-largest bank, HBOS PLC, is considering making a bid to purchase Abbey National PLC and is inquiring about international financing that might make such a move possible. HBOS's plans have surfaced as Spain's Banco Santander Central Hispano S.A. prepares to make a formal bid for Abbey National. The possibility of a merger between HBOS and Abbey National is causing waves through Britain's banking community as such a deal would give the combined company 34% of the U.K. mortgage market and control over a third of all savings accounts.
