Good news is bad news: British banks

Banking investors' profits will rise this year but not as high as expected. Britain's TSB group, 6th largest, suffered a pre-tax loss of $80 million. This is taken as an omen by investing circles. Banks are downsizing and increasing fees to offset some of the shortfall.

Barclays Bank posted a pre-tax profit of 335 million pounds sterling for the first half of 1993 after a large 1992 loss. Barclays' BZW investment bank and domestic retail arm boosted the profits, but the bank is still looking for a CEO. Other UK banks also posted gains.

Udder madness: British insolvency reform
Article Abstract:
Great Britain needs to reconsider the way in which ailing companies are rescued because of the high costs to taxpayers. The use of the London Approach to discuss a rescue with lenders should be coordinated by independent chairmen and not require a unanimous decision.
