New York City experimented with state of the art public toilets from France and got a very favorable public response until special interest groups got them removed. Mayor David Dinkins is fighting state and local bureaucracy in an attempt to bring them back.

A bad case of backache: New York's judiciary

New York Court of Appeals chief judge Sol Wachtler was arrested and charged with extortion in Nov 1992. Wachtler, a prominent figure in New York State Republican politics, had been attempting to blackmail socialite Joy Silverman, with whom he had an affair.

When big pips squeak: New York

Businesses are leaving New York City at an alarming rate, mostly because of very high corporate taxes. The city is without a retention strategy and the departing businesses is seriously shrinking its tax base. Private sector employment has plummeted.
