Increasing airtightness: New standards and test procedures for airtightness are helping designers deal with this weak link in environmental performance
Article Abstract:
Standards of airtightness in buildings are often low, but good airtightness design and construction could be promoted by testing of the building prior to handover. Thermographic testing has already greatly improved the installation of insulation in industrial buildings in Wales. The Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA) has introduced recommendations for new-build airtightness standards.

Avoiding office air-conditioning: recent monitoring of lower-energy offices in use shows ways to avoid or reduce the energy use and cost of air-conditioning
Article Abstract:
Designers need to make the facilities for lower-energy offices simple, stable, effective and robust, using standards appropriate to context. Ventilation routes and resistance to flow should be carefully considered as internal partitions, windown design and security will affect acceptance of temperatures and ventilation rates. Natural ventilation can compromise security, so mechanical assistance can be simpler.
