Indonesia can afford opposition
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's democracy has developed to where it can manage and would benefit from political opposition. A loyal opposition would encourage the government to be respectable and trustworthy, it would provide valuable feedback and an important social safety valve, it would enhance the country's international stature, and it would prevent popular support for more dangerous, radical groups. Indonesia has a diverse culture and a non-uniform tradition, though political developments from the 1950s to the 1970s encouraged uniformity.

Indonesia's prize scars
Article Abstract:
The controversy surrounding the award of the 1995 Magsaysay Award to Indonesia's Pramoedya Ananta Toer reveals the dillemas and moral pitfalls of that country's political development. In the 1960s Pramoedya helped create a campaign against writers considered by the Communist Party to be counter-revolutionary, culminating in a purge of intellectuals who opposed socialist realism. Now the writers who suffered say that, despite his own long record of mistreatment by the Suharto regime, Pramoedya deserves no awards.

Who is Xanana Gusmao?
Article Abstract:
The extensive media campaign purportedly waged by Xanana Gusmao from his cell in Cipinang prison is a complete fabrication by people ooposed to East Timor's decision to seek independence by allying with Indonesia. Xanana Gusmao led the bloody Fretilin rebellion from 1978 to 1992, and is now serving a 20-year sentence for his crimes. In an interview with prison authorities he repudiated the many letters and tape recordings he supposedly made urging global intervention in East Timor.
