Indonesia's agony and the price of rice
Article Abstract:
Food price rises are causing hardship in Indonesia and farmers may be storing rice, in addition to wealthier consumers. The government aims to control themarket through its agency, Bulog. The government system of releasing subsidised rice can be abused, and some of this rice has been sold abroad. There is concern that corrupt politics could affect the food supply. Food offers opportunities for politicians to make money that can be used for campaign funds.
