Industry rallies against Hatch Amendment
Article Abstract:
The aviation security industry continues its lobbying efforts against the Hatch Amendment to the US Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act. As a result, the Amendment may not be passed in its original form. The industry is against the Amendment because it would require foreign airlines to institute security measures identical to those used by US airlines. The Amendment would cost airports tens of millions of dollars and adversely affect terminal capacity at a time when congestion is increasing.

Article Abstract:
The San Francisco Airport Authority has decided to use a radio frequency identification technology for its baggage-screening operations at its International Terminal. With the use of such technology, airport authorities will have a more reliable means of identifying bags for security screening. In addition, it offers a higher read rate compared to conventional bar code technology. The airport is working with BAE Automated Systems to develop and install the technology.

The US Federal Aviation Administration has tapped the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center to evaluate commercial-off-the- shelf systems that can be used to detect and control airport ground movement.
