Article Abstract:
The CSA institute carried out a survey of 1,004 people eighteen years old and over, on 28 May 1998, which shows that 54% of the French have confidence in the quality of their food and 45% do not. Women are more distrustful than men; 51% do not have confidence in their food compared with 38% of the men. The elderly have less confidence than young people. Concerning information on risks linked to food, 77% of the French trust consumer associations, 64% trust doctors, 59% trust ecologists and 58% trust scientists. However 78% think that politicians do not tell the truth, 72% do not have confidence in the food industry, 67% do not believe large retailers and 57% say that journalists are not open. Of those surveyed, 79% of the French fear antibiotics and hormones in their food, 77% fear nitrates in their water, 71% fear the effects of nuclear treatment, 65% fear transgenic treatment, 62% fear dioxin in milk and meat, and 59% fear mad cow disease. *

La certification de conformit gagne rapidement du terrain
Article Abstract:
Cepral, an association of certifying organisations for the promotion of food and agriculture sector product certification systems, has produced a statement for 1997 which shows the development of compliance certification named Atout Qualit Certifi . Although this quality label is unknown to the general public, it has overtaken the others and now ranks second among the various certifications. The new Atout Qualit Certifi certified products represented a turnover of FFr 12.4bn in 1997, up 65% from 1996. For 1998 a 47% rise in turnover, at FFr 18.3bn, is forecast, for a 15% share of the total product sales under quality signs such as AOC, Labels, and AB.

Article Abstract:
The CNA, the National Food Council, has published a warning concerning 'health allegations' which link food products and health, and 'therapeutic allegations' which claim curative powers for food products. The CNA asks that the use of health allegations by food products be supervised, and that the use of unauthorised therapeutic allegations be banned. The CNA has asked that a clear, effective regulatory system be set up, that their be greater rigour in applying sanctions to fraudulent allegations by educating the general public through doctors, and by harmonising the systems of countries belonging to the European Union.
