According to Nordiska Fondkomission's telecom analyst Jonas Blomberg, the decline in Swedish Ericsson's stock quotation is for one part due to Finnish Nokia's success in mobile phones. The companies are on the same level in technical development. However, consumers consider Ericsson's phones look outdated compared to Nokia's phones. From the beginning of 1999 the situation may change when Ericsson introduces their new models. According to daring estimates, Nokia holds 30% of the mobile phone markets and Ericsson 20% in 1998.

According to Finnish Food Marketing Association MD Osmo Laine, in the Finnish milk product markets Swedish Arla has been a considerable competitor and option for Finnish Valio. Arla has also increased price competition significantly. Moreover, product range has become more wide. According to Laine, combining Arla's and Valio's cheeses would lead to there being only one deliverer and one price on the Finnish markets. This would further tighten small producers possibilities to compete with the prices.
