Article Abstract:

There is growing domestic and international political pressure on the military regime in Burma to begin negotiations with the National League for Democracy, headed by dissident Aung San Suu Kyi. There are also indications of conflict between military intelligence and the rest of the armed forces, and it is possible that continued pressure on the military regime will fuel a damaging power struggle. The regime has been taking a tough line, but there are indications that this stance is not supported by all its main figures.
