Ericsson's profit dives 51% as Nokia posts 96% leap

Telefon AB LM Ericsson announced that its pretax profits for the first quarter of 1999 fell by 51%. This was well below what analysts had predicted. Ericsson also cautioned that its earnings for the entire 1999 year would be below its results for 1998. In addition, Nokia Corp. posted a pretax profit and sales improvement of 96% for the 1999 first quarter. Nokia is also optimistic about its results for the entire 1999 year.
