Is Employment Policy a Thing of the Past?
Article Abstract:
At a time in history when unemployment is at nearly record levels on a world-wide basis it seems that governments have abdicated responsibility of helping to insure adequate employment levels. This seeming paradox is due to a number of factors. Economists have led government to believe that market forces will right the problem. In addition, rampant inflation has led government to shy away from additional spending. Balance of payments problems and budget deficits also reinforce government's tendency to do nothing. Unfortunately, the problem is unlikely to solve itself without government intervention.

Poland: the next big thing
Article Abstract:
Poland has 38.6 million people, is well situated as a starting point from which to reach central Europe and it hopes to become a member of the European Union. The Polish government is encouraging privatisation and US$12 billion has been invested since 1989. Nestle and Unilever are investing in Poland, as are automobile companies such as Daewoo, which is going to invest $1.1 billion in a new car plant, and General Motors. Poland needs to build better roads and it is likely that toll roads, built by foreign construction companies, will be one way of financing these.
