A kick in the Asean; The Philippines bids for trade leadership
Article Abstract:
The Philippine government has proposed that the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) adopt an economic policy that will eliminate all preferential tariffs without regard to reciprocity by 2000. This policy would benefit all ASEAN countries by increasing efficiency and national wealth through open trade. A single group policy like the Philippine proposal is more efficient that seven separate agreements. Only Brunei and Singapore currently have nondiscriminatory tariffs in place among ASEAN members.
