Is the UK moving towards a recession?
Article Abstract:
There is concern that the Asian financial crisis could spread to the United Kingdom, and UK economic growth appears to be falling. Recessions have occurred at the beginning of the 1980s and 1990s, but the UK labor and housing markets are strong and debt levels are relatively low. The Asian crisis may not have much impact on the UK since only 3.1% of UK gross domestic product (GDP) is accounted for by trade with Asia. There may be less danger of a global glut than is thought, and pound sterling could drop in value, which would help the UK trade position. The UK government could also help avoid a recession through appropriate policies.

Averting a UK recession
Article Abstract:
There has been a slowdown in the expansion of economic activity in the UK, and there is now the danger of a recession emerging. This will happen if actual output drops because of a decline in aggregate demand and potential output falls because of a slump in investment. If the UK economy moves into recession, unemployment will rise and incomes will fall, having a negative impact on living standards. Possible steps the government could take to avert recession include cutting corporation tax, thus boosting investment, and introducing measures to increase aggregate supply.
