Isle of angst
Article Abstract:
The slow growth of exports, due mainly to increasing reliance on mainland China, was the main source of economic uncertainty in Taiwan in the 1st qtr of 1993. GNP went up by 6.2%, less than the government's 6.6% forecast but significantly higher than the growth rates of the US and Japan, Taiwan's principal trading partners. Merchandise trade exports increased by 3.4% while imports increased 13%. Government debt was forecast to stand at $62 billion by Jun 1993. The 1.5% unemployment rate reflects Taiwan's labor shortage.

Slippery slope
Article Abstract:
Several signs suggest Taiwan is having unexpected trouble shrugging off the economic effects of China's intimidation campaign early in 1996. Annualized growth in the year's first half may be as low as 5%, and investment outflows are up sharply while inflows are down, suggesting less expensive areas such as the Chinese mainland are gaining competitiveness. Taiwan's central bank has had little luck pushing growth in M2, a measure of money supply, hitting a growth rate of 7%-8% versus a target of 9%-14%.

There's no escape
Article Abstract:
Taiwan has remained largely outside the economic crisis in Asia. However, there have been a number of repercussions for the Taiwanese economy. The Central Bank of China has become more market-friendly as a result of instability in regional foreign-exchange markets, and it is likely that the New Taiwan dollar will now move more freely. However, the increased freedom of Taiwan's currency will probably delay the opening up of financial markets by 2000.
