Cardinal Enrique Tarancon has publicly denounced the high level of corruption in the Spanish government. The level of corruption is higher than under the fascist government of Francisco Franco, but corruption was more easily hidden then. Election contribution laws may also be a factor.

Gonzalez was elected for his fourth term in office, which is unprecedented for a European Community leader. His party of Socialists remain in power, having won 159 seats in parliament. Gonzalez may change his economic policies, because of the deep recession.
