The Israel elections on June 23 will probably result in a coalition government between the Likud and Labor parties. Unless Labor wins a clear victory the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza strip will continue. Even a clear cut Labor victory may not mean a withdrawal.

Israeli relations with Syria are stalled, and municipal elections in the West Bank and Gaza strip are difficult issues for Yitzhak Shamir. With upcoming elections, Shamir needs to find peaceful solutions and placate the US government, which is not pleased with his performance.
