Binyamin Netanyahu seems to have won a close election in Israel, and will take over from Shimon Peres as that country's leader. It is anticipated that Netanyahu will exhibit a tougher approach to the peace process with the Palestinians, such as allowing Jewish settlers greater expansion.

Coalition bricks without straw

The Israeli government is in a very precarious state, as neither the Likud or the Labor party is apt to win a simple majority in the Jun 23 election. The next government could hinge on how minor parties fare, as a coalition will likely have to be negotiated following the election.

Good for Israel

The Jun 23 electoral defeat of Yitzhak Shamir's Likud Party by Yitzhak Rabin's Labour Party in Israel could signal a big change in Israeli-Arab relations. Rabin seems much more likely to make territorial concessions in order to secure a lasting peace in the region.
