Cardinal Jaime Sin, the Archbishop of Manila, has become highly vocal about the upcoming presidential elections in the Philippines. The country is 84% Catholic, and Sin has much influence. He opposes anyone who was connected with Ferdinand Marcos and anyone who is Protestant. He appears to favor Ramon Mitra.

The budding democracies of Asian countries such as the Philippines are troubled by corruption and inefficiency. But they are a promising alternative to autocracies, as they bring certain freedoms. The democracies of Asian countries all possess the potential to improve.
