There are likely to be many different applications in the future for smartcards. The most advanced smartcards are already able to operate like a miniature personal computer, and contain a processor, an operating system, applications and a memory. Some companies have begun using smartcards as a replacement for cash, while others are using them for identification purposes. The growing capacity of smartcards is making it possible to include multiple applications from different suppliers.

Using geographic information can greatly assist companies in assess their target customer areas. There are now a number of software products which allow companies to gain such information with ease. When selecting a supplier, it is worth looking for companies which belong to the Association for Geographic Information. Key suppliers include Dataview Solutions and Mapinfo. The former is a consultancy and software development operation based on Mapinfo software.
