It's time to reinvent Taiwan's PC economy
Article Abstract:
The personal computer (PC) industry in Taiwan needs to reposition itself in view of the new market focus on software, networking and communications. PC-manufacturing companies have experienced rapid growth of as high as 100% from 1996-1998. This can be attributed mainly to outsourcing from US companies and to the commodification of the microcomputer. However, the trend may have reached its peak. High growth has turned towards network products, telecommunication equipment and specialized appliances.

It's time to reinvent Taiwan's PC economy
Article Abstract:
There is a need to reconfigure Taiwan's strategy in the field of personal computer (PC) manufacture in light of the evolving trends towards networking, software and communications products development. PC manufacture, which is responsible for much of the prosperity in the region, is experiencing a decline that is expected to be about 14% in 1999. A huge decrease in world PC prices and the introduction of the free PC are adding to the bleak future of the industry.
