Cathay expected to enter alliance with American, British Air, Qantas

Cathay Pacific Airways is expected to make a major announcement on Sep. 21, 1998, concerning its proposed alliance with American Airlines, British Airways and Qantas Airways. In the past weeks, Cathay has been rumored that it will form an alliance with British Airways, its partner American Airlines and others. However, Cathay has declined to confirm if it will indeed form an alliance with the other airlines. According to Zayong Koo, director and regional aviation analyst for Hong Kong-based Dresdner Kleinwort Benson Securities (Asia) Ltd., Cathay's alliance with other airlines will pave the way for its entrance in the US and other European markets.

Lufthansa hit with fine, faces scrutiny on fares

Lufthansa was fined 10,000 euros by the European Commission (EC) for allegedly providing incentives to customers who utilize a certain computerized reservation system. Lufthansa is a major stockholder of this system. The EC said that the carrier's actions discriminated against clients who use other systems. According to the EC, Lufthansa is the first company to be punished for being in violation of the code of conduct for computer reservation systems.
