JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SOLUBLE ..
Article Abstract:
The cement industry had a balanced demand-supply ratio 4 years ago but the increase in capacity by 20-30 million tonnes in the western region of India has affected the industry with only the big units having the power to survive. The northern region of India consumed 21.7 million tonnes in 1997-98, the western region 21.4 million tonnes, the southern region about 21 million tonnes and the eastern region 9.45 million tonnes. The industry started exporting cement to make up for the glut in the domestic market but the currency crisis in the south-east Asian countries has ensured that their products are cheaper than that sourced from India. CEMENT PRICES UP ON HIGHER OFFTAKE
Article Abstract:
Cement prices in Gujarat and interior cities of Maharashtra have risen by Rs3 to Rs5 per bag due to increase in usage of cement. On an average, the cement prices have shot up by 10 to 15 percent during November 1998. In Gujarat, the prices moved from Rs95 per bag in October 1998 to Rs120 per bag in November 1998. With the upcoming infrastructure projects - Mumbai-Pune highway and construction activity for the Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation - an increase has been noticed in the demand for cement. Some of cement producers have taken up production cuts. Also the dumping from neighbouring states have stopped resulting in cement prices to march back to previous rates. (um)
