Jakarta tries to reassure multinationals
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's Minister of Mines and Energy Kuntoro Mangkusubroto is reassuring multinationals that the government will honor contracts signed between state-owned energy concerns and companies with ties to the family of former President Suharto. The news is a relief for Mobil Corp., which has a joint venture with Suharto's youngest son, Hutomo Mandala Putra, to produce liquefied natural gas in East Java, and for Atlantic Richfield Co, which is in a tie-up with Suharto's son Bambang Trihatmodjo in an East Java oil-and-gas project.

Jakarta, IMF alter accord
Article Abstract:
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will be loaning $43 bil to Indonesia to help save the country's economy. The financial assistance will give the country a GDP budget deficit of 8.5% for the year ending March 31, 1999. Moreover, the government has implemented various economic reforms to strengthen the value of rupiah. Meanwhile, analysts are criticizing the IMF and Indonesian agreement as one that would ultimately weaken the rupiah, aside from the government's credibility to restructure the country's financial system.
