Jakarta's market barometer
Article Abstract:
Indonesian government-owned Bank Mandiri hopes to sell a dollar-denominated bond issue of perhaps $100 million overseas, despite the fact that most foreign investors want to avoid putting money into Indonesia. Chief Financial Officer Keat Lee says that the bank doesn't really need to raise the money, but it wants to test the market. Observers say that buyers will likely be other Indonesian companies, and that the reason for the bond issue might be to reassure foreign investors that Indonesia is a safe place for investing, once they see this bond issue succeed.

Thai bank's shares may slip
Article Abstract:
Analysts are predicting a decline in the prices of securities of Bangkok Bank, which has been considerably unaffected by the troubles of the stock market in 1997, by as much as 20% to 30% in 1998. Problems may arise due to the bank's nonperforming loans and due to the influences of the private sector, which is burdened with debts. The overall economic climate may bring down share prices of the bank, which is the source of some 25% of the country's total private credit.
