Santander's Botin faces new test: sharing power

Banco Santander's chairman, Emilio Botin, has taken several gambles in an attempt to place the bank at the top of the Spanish banking industry. Mr. Botin replaced his father as the head of Santander in 1986. In 1989, the bank begin the first high-yield current account. This created a newly-competitive period in Spain's banking sector. In January 1999, Santander merged with the third-largest bank in Spain, Banco Central Hispanoamericano. The deal could make Mr. Botin the leader of the Spanish financial market.
