Janssen Pharma made a 1997 net profit of BFr 6.5bn, up 9% from 1996, and a turnover of BFr 35.2bn, up 11.8%. It allocated BFr 12bn to its research and development efforts in 1997, compared with BFr 8.9bn in 1996, and these good results are due to the BFr 3.7bn investment in extension and renovation of its production equipment. This subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson is currently working on developing two medications, one for Alzheimer's, and the other to treat constipation. These two products are planned to go on the market in 2002. SKB investit 6 milliards Wavre

In Belgium, the pharmaceutical company SmithKline Beecham has inaugurated 17 of the 32 hectares located at Wavre, where it is going to invest a total of BFr 6.3bn. The plant specialises in the product of vaccines against viruses, and is currently carrying out studies on around twenty products. Two new vaccines are to be marketed by the end of 1998 - Simplirix, a prophylactic vaccine, and Boosterix, for longer protection against whooping cough, diphtheria, and tetanus. Ultimately this plant will have a staff of 500 people.

Sioen investit plus d'un milliard Mouscron

Sioen Industries, the Belgian firm that is active in the technical textiles and specialised chemicals industry, is going to invest BFr 1.1bn in the extension of its activities in the Belgian town of Mouscron. The new unit, created under the name Sioen Fibres SA, a limited liability group, is expected to be operational at the beginning of the year 2000 and will employ 60 staff. It will produce a high tenacity thread. The investment forms part of the company's regional development plan 'Objectif 1'.
