The dominance of American personal-computer manufacturers in the US and worldwide is being threatened by the renewed aggressiveness of their Japanese competitors. Toshiba Corp., the only Japanese firm to establish a strong presence in American soil, has announced its intention to sell its own desktop systems in the US and in the rest of the world. Meanwhile, Sony Corp., Hitachi Ltd., Fujitsu Ltd. and NEC Corp. have all made public their plans to break into the US market.

NTT Data's initial success may signal turnaround in Japan's market for IPOs

The enthusiastic reception to NTT Data Communications Corp.'s initial public offering (IPO) on Apr. 26, 1995 may indicate a change in Japan's lackluster market for IPOs. Share prices of NTT Data, an information-systems unit of telephone company Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp., have climbed by about 27% since it was first offered to the public. Japan Telecom Co. and Japan Tobacco Inc. have previously launched IPOs with dismal results.

NEC to boost investment in Packard Bell

NEC Corp. of Japan will boost its investment into troubled Packard Bell NEC Inc. with an additional $225 million. NEC will also formally acquire Packard Bell NEC and make the US manufacturer of personal computers its subsidiary. NEC, a manufacturer of electronics, is now faced with the challenge of steering Packard Bell NEC towards a market turnaround, a development the former managers of Packard Bell were unable to achieve.
