Japan's leading pharmaceutical companies are planning an unprecedented expansion overseas. They are compelled to look for new markets by slow growth and fierce competition at home. Giant drug makers, including Eisai Co., Sankyo Co. and Takeda Chemical Industries are expected to enter foreign markets through such strategies as forming joint ventures, investing in new research facilities for foreign talent, and strengthening sales networks.

Japan machine-tool firms are steadily recovering

Analysts are upbeat about the prospects of Japanese machine-tool manufacturers as the demand for new equipment gathers strength. The machine-tool sector was hit hard by the recession in the early 1990s, and many companies found themselves with far more capacity than that necessitated by the level of demand. However, orders for machine-tools have steadily grown in the past few months.
