Writers' bloc: best-selling author Amy Tan opens the door for fellow Asian-American writers
Article Abstract:
Asian-American writer Amy Tan inaugurated mainstream literary recognition of her ethnic group in the US, and many other talented authors are finding success there. Tan's first book, 'The Joy Luck Club,' sold four million copies, and her latest, 'The Hundred Secret Senses,' just came out. There is no one explanation for the sudden success of Asian-American writers, or for the diversification of the field beyond those of Chinese descent. Many hope ultimately to be seen simply as gifted authors rather than ethnic labels.

Talking in tongues
Article Abstract:
Asian-laguage programs in California offer non-Asians the chance to learn a language as well as serving the needs of Asians. Instruction is available in Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean. Some non-Asian parents like the discipline in these schools, and others see Asian languages as important given the economic development of Asia. Asian children need to retain a language more often than learning English. The programs work best when children start young.
