Japan's kaisha go multinational and learn to innovate
Article Abstract:
Kaisha, the Japanese term for companies, are slowly moving toward increased multinationalization and a higher degree of innovation, both of which indicate that the level of Japanese competition in markets in which they are already involved as well as those in which they are not yet involved is likely to increase in the future. To date the kaisha have emphasized microelectronics, new materials and biotechnology, the first having met with astounding success, and the other two still immature. Despite their size and rate of growth, the kaisha remain flexible enough to adapt quickly to new technologies and innovations, but not all are as adept at making the changes as companies such as Nippon Kogaku K.K. (Nippon). Trends in Japanese corporate planning are described.

For NTT, a revolution in consciousness: learning to compete: two telephone monopolies take the plunge into the real world
Article Abstract:
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.'s privatization plans beginning April 1, 1985, at which time three new telecommunications laws go into effect, is presenting the company's management with some unique problems, due in large part to the uniqueness of the Japanese telecommunications system. While it recorded $1.5 billion in earnings on $17.5 billion in revenues in 1984, the company benefited from its government's support and must now deal with an oversized payroll and a bureaucratic organization that will make it more difficult for the company to compete in open markets. The management changes being effected at the company are described, and the talents that will need to be developed in the company's managers are discussed.
