Update: Flexible Benefits May Be Less Flexible
Article Abstract:
Certain flexible employee benefit programs, in which medical expenses are paid by employees with pretax dollars, are being labeled invalid by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). These plans commonly use payroll deductions (of pre tax dollars) to increase an employee's benefit buying power. It is believed that the IRS may be disallowing some of these benefits in an effort to stop the practice of refunding unspent monies back to the employee at the end of the year.
