Shot heard 'round the world: U.S. threatens Japan with toughest sanctions yet
Article Abstract:
Bill Clinton's threats of trade sanctions against Japan for inequitable trade balances in the automobile industry have both an economic and political basis and yet could throw the US into a major trade war. The trade sanction threat is being used as a bluff which, if Japan does not give in, could have serious repercussions. To answer the bluff, Japanese leaders would have to force Japanese people and companies to buy US products. Market forces are already eroding Japanese policies that are anticompetitive because of the increasingly global market.

The Pacific moment: an uncertain America muddles the Taiwan Strait
Article Abstract:
Mixed messages from US President Bill Clinton encouraged China in the course leading to military exercises off Taiwan, but if Clinton will now adhere to his vows, regional security may improve. China itself is acting inconsistently with its reassurances, and it cannot truly believe neighbors will accept its claim that Taiwan is a purely internal matter. The events of Mar 1996 will stand out as a defining moment in Pacific relations, determining the future of the security arrangements that have helped ensure prosperity.

Friendly fire: the cost of Japan-bashing
Article Abstract:
Heightened tensions between Japan and the US indicate future trouble, and point to the need for immediate steps to a resolution. Though the alleged rape of a 12-year-old Okinawan girl by US troops is the immediate cause, it is simply a political football. The US bears most responsibility for deteriorating relations, thanks chiefly to bipartisan Japan-bashing and President Clinton's decision to beat up on friends when 'tyrants' proved too difficult. Japan, though, bears its share of blame as well.
