Joe Arpaio, tyrant of the desert
Article Abstract:
Maricopa county sheriff, Joe Arpaio, has high approval ratings and aims to be the toughest sheriff in the US. The jail population in the county has risen by 100% since he became sheriff. He argues that conditions inside jail should be worse than conditions outside. He has been the subject of legal action for alleged harsh treatment, but argues that his methods have attracted would-be imitators. A study has shown that his methods do not affect reoffending rates.
