John Kasich, fading Jacobin
Article Abstract:
Chairman of the budget committee of the House is John Kasich, a Republican and populist who exploits his modest origins. He opposes the establishment, and had a web site which set out proposals for government spending cuts to achieve spending targets. Cuts include the end of support for poor farmers, and for the soft loan division of the World Bank. Kasich is making a bid to be president, and has moved to focusing on tax cuts rather than spending cuts, and no longer volunteers targets for cuts.

Dividing the spoils
Article Abstract:
Forecasts for the US budget surplus are that it will be larger than expected and President Bill Clinton favors using the surplus for the Medicare and Social Security system. He also appears to favor some tax cuts, though the Republicans are more in favor of tax cuts. Budget forecasts are often wrong, and the population is ageing, so there are promises from both main parties to save the surplus. Clinton wants to extend Medicare to cover drugs, and also aims to improve the efficiency of Medicare.
