Beware the buyer: China's consumers demand value for money
Article Abstract:
Individual savings in China shot up to about Rmb 1.2 trillion (US$ 224 billion) after a lull in consumer spending due to dissatisfaction with shabby state factory products. Knowing that the huge savings reserve could trigger runaway inflation, the Chinese government began a slogan campaign in 1991 to improve product and service quality to encourage consumer spending. The campaign produced some results, particularly in the electronics industry, which registered a significant drop in products complaints. Consumer spending correspondingly picked up by 13.2% to Rmb 940 billion in the same year.
