Justice for genocide, Rwandan-style

The Rwandan government recruited judges to hear war crimes cases by awarding positions to those who scored highest in general-knowledge questions. Unseasoned judges, mostly Tutsis, are hearing cases in which many defendants are unable to mount a proper defense.

A tale of two homecomings

Pres Motbutu Sese Seko came home to Zaire after spending four months in Europe for cancer treatment, and at the same time some 200,000 refugees were returning to Rwanda after a two years absence. The two homecomings were pictures of stark contrast.

The hope for Zaire: a fresh start, not a ceasefire
Article Abstract:
Efforts underway to prevent civil war in Zaire are admirable, but a ceasefire will only postpone a war. Rebel leader Laurent Kabila is a better choice for leader than Pres Mobutu, as he would be more likely to be able to hold the country together.
