K-Max UAV plan
Article Abstract:
Kaman Aerospace has won a $4.2 million contract from the Marine Corp Warfighting Lab to design, construct and install a prototype, remote piloting system in a Kaman K-Max helicopter. The firm will also flight test the helicopter to gauge its flying capabilities as an unmanned aerial vehicle that can deliver external loads to precise locations in a logistic re-supply mission to marines on a simulated battlefield and return to base. The flight test is scheduled to be conducted during summer 2000 at the Marine Corp AirGround Combat Centre in California.

Smart blades
Article Abstract:
Boeing engineers in Philadelphia, PA, hopes to apply smart material technology to tiltrotor prop rotors to maximize performance in both the hover and forward flight modes. Smart materials are substances which change shape when exposed to thermal, electrical or magnetic energy and go back to their original shape when the stimulus is removed. Boeing is already making a study on the integration of the technology into helicopter rotor blades to reduce vibration and noise levels and boost rotor aerodynamics.

New radome for Comanche
Article Abstract:
Boeing-Sikorsky is planning to mount a new lighter flat-top dome radome directly to the main rotorhead of the RAH-6 Comanche. The radome will house the millimeterwave fire control radar on the helicopter. Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, which supplies the Boeing AH-64D Apache with Longbow radar, are competing for the Comanche contract. The new radome is aimed at allowing airportability without dismantling and at saving weight.
